The symptoms are like something out of a horror film or the Walking Dead: After shivering in the clutches of a high fever, its victims' skin grows black in patches and they bleed from their mouths and noses. Everyone has a theory about what causes it - The full moon! A curse! Divine judgment! - but no one has guessed that the real culprits were the fleas carried by rats (vermin were kind of an issue back then). With so many horrible things happening, it's a good thing that the doctors were always beacons of warmth and comfort...YIKES. That's the doctor? He looks scarier than the Grim Reaper! Hmm. That's probably not a good sign.
